Professional Certificate in Fiber Optics Essentials and Advanced Applications

The Professional Certificate in Fiber Optics Essentials and Advanced Applications is designed to provide students with the basic core knowledge that prepares them for success in the fiber optics industry. This program is offered predominantly through distance education. Lab coursework, where applicable, enhances practical fiber knowledge and application.
Students completing this program can demonstrate a practical knowledge of fiber optic theory, codes, standards and practices widely accepted in the industry today. Emphasis is placed on the skills necessary to perform installation and troubleshooting with OTDR and other instruments typically used. This program will also provide the student with knowledge and skills necessary to work safely in high voltage environments.
By completing this program students will receive college credits, and will have the opportunity to gain mastery knowledge to successfully pass ETA industry certification exams.
As an authorized proctoring institution for ETA, APT can arrange for students to take the ETA FOI and ETA FOT industry certification exams.

Program Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this program you will be able to:
  • Understand the operation of the main components of a fiber optic system
  • Describe the standards that regulate fiber optic systems design, installation, and maintenance
  • Perform lab activities such as mechanical and fusion splicing, fiber termination, fiber characterization using OLTS, and troubleshooting by means of an OTDR
  • Discuss the use of telecommunications systems based on fiber optics to protect individuals from Ground Potential Rise (GPR) in high voltage environment

    APT College Credit Evaluation Committee will evaluate all applicable transfer credit and work experience toward the degree program.

    Courses

    This course provides students with an understanding of high voltage protection equipment used in power substations to maintain in operation critical telecommunications systems also during a fault (power surge, lightning, etc.). It also explains how telecommunications systems are integrated into the power transmission systems and are used to isolate the faulted zones during an outage. Methods to calculate the Ground Potential Rise (GPR) and the Zone of Interest (ZOI) during a fault are thoroughly explained. Finally, the course introduces the safety gear and discusses the rules to be observed in high voltage environment during installation and maintenance.

    This course provides a comprehensive understanding of fiber optic systems used in the telecommunications industry. The course begins with a discussion of the optical concepts related to light waves, and an explanation of how light carrying information propagates down the fiber. The course progresses with a description of the optical components used in fiber optic systems including light sources, optical fiber types, connectors, types of cables and their use, and photodetectors. Different splicing techniques are discussed as well as the use of several test instruments to measure fiber optic systems performance. Techniques to develop a fiber optic system link budget considering system losses are also introduced. Students will be engaged in an extensive hands-on lab giving an opportunity to demonstrate and test what they have learned. The course prepares the student for the ETA Fiber Optic Installer (FOI) industry certification.

    This course provides a comprehensive understanding of fiber optic systems used in the telecommunications industry today. The course begins with a discussion on light propagation and the introduction of various types of optical fibers. The main building blocks of a fiber optic system are then discussed from the light sources to the photodetectors, including connectors and fiber optic cables used for any type of environment. Optical transport systems such as SONET and OTN along with FTTx architectures and Passive Optical Networks used to implement broadband access networks based on fibers are then explored. Students will learn about the system design criteria used to build an efficient fiber optic system such as performance versus cost and loss budget considerations. Finally, several test equipment tools used for installation and troubleshooting purposes are introduced, including the Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR). Safety rules in handling optical fibers are also reviewed. At the end of the course, students will be engaged in an extensive hands-on lab where they will apply what they have learned to splice and troubleshoot optical fibers with various methods.
