Professional Certificate in Telecommunications Essentials

The Professional Certificate in Telecommunications Essentials is designed to provide the students with sufficient core knowledge to start their career in the telecommunications industry.
The student will gain an understanding of basic electricity and electronics, data communication and network principles, and the essentials of wireless communication technologies and related standards.

Program Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this program you will be able to:
  • List and describe DC and AC electrical and electronic components and perform the analysis of circuits by using the fundamental electrical laws
  • Explain the role of protocol architectures and TCP/IP in the network today
  • Discuss transmission media, data transmission, line encoding, error detection and correction, and multiplexing as they apply to communications and data networks
  • Understand the operation of the main components of wireless systems and describe the related standards

  • Requirements
    The Professional Certificate in Telecommunications Essentials requires students to complete the 3 courses listed in the Table below.
    Please refer to the College Catalog for more detailed information.
    APT College Credit Evaluation Committee will evaluate all applicable transfer credit and work experience toward the degree program.

    Courses

    This course provides a basic understanding of the electrical, electronic, and computer fundamental concepts, and the digital technologies as they apply to the telecommunications industry. Upon completion of the course students will be able to analyze an electrical circuit in any configuration, both under DC and AC condition, and will have an understanding of the operation of the main electrical and electronic components. Digital and analog instruments and the related measuring procedures will be introduced as well as the electrical safety rules to be followed. Numbering systems, logic gates, and principles of computer architecture are illustrated. An overview of telecommunications systems including Digital Signal Processing performed on voice and data signals before being transmitted (A/D conversion, modulation, line encoding, and multiplexing) and the description of transmission media currently in use (copper pair, optical fibers, wireless on air) are provided. T-carrier system and SONET standard and related hierarchies are also introduced.

    This course provides a comprehensive understanding of the electrical and electronic fundamental concepts at the basis of any technological industry. Upon completion of the course students will be able to determine voltage, current, resistance, and power values for electrical circuits in any configuration, both under DC and AC condition, and will have an understanding of the operation of the main electrical and electronic components. The operation of several electrical and electronic devices such as filters, single and multi-stage amplifiers, rectifiers, voltage regulators, and power supplies is explored. The basic principles of troubleshooting electronic devices are also introduced.

    This course provides a survey of the fundamentals of data communications and networks. It begins with a look at important aspects of data communications, data networks, and the Internet along with key facets of protocol architectures, TCP/IP, and Internet-Based applications. The concepts and terminology centered on data transmission, transmission media, signaling encoding techniques, and error detection/correction are also covered. The course wraps-up with a look at the value of data link control protocols and multiplexing in data communications and networks today. Multimedia content and interactive simulations are used throughout to reinforce course concepts.

    Wireless technologies permit two-way communications that are impossible or impractical to implement with the use of wires. Wireless encompasses various types of fixed, mobile, and portable applications, including public safety radios, cellular telephones, smart phones, tablets, and various sensors devices. This course provides students with an introduction to the world of wireless technology that is impacting every sector of our interconnected world today. The course helps the student develop core knowledge centered in wireless standards and a conceptual understanding of the design, communication and components that enable current wireless technologies including 3G and ultimately 4G (LTE).
